Legislation Stems from Issue in Newton

Legislation sponsored by Senator Steve Oroho (R-Sussex, Warren, Morris) to clamp down on absentee owners of rooming and boarding houses was passed by the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee. The measure was drafted in response to several problems the town of Newton has been experiencing.

“Our communities deserve and expect a certain level of decency and cooperation from operators of shared housing complexes,” said Oroho. “Hearing from both town officials as well as the residents living near these boarding homes, we realized greater enforcement powers are needed to rein in delinquent owners of such properties.”

Senator Steven Oroho (R-Sussex, Warren, Morris) applauded the approach to New Jersey public school funding released today as part of Gov. Chris Christie’s proposed budget.

Public school districts in Senator Oroho’s 24th legislative district are slated to receive the highest combined increase in state aid, 3.3 percent, with no district facing a decrease in aid.

“This is a welcomed improvement for our communities, thanks in large part to Gov. Christie listening to the call to alter a state funding formula bias against rural school districts,” Oroho said. “The governor’s proposed budget makes a significant investment in education which will benefit students as well as property taxpayers.”

Oroho Concerned With Purported Sandy Charity from Sparta

Senator Steven Oroho (R-Sussex, Warren, Morris) stated the following about an Asbury Park Press news investigation of an alleged Sandy charity from Sparta, boasting some $1 million in public donations:

The Asbury Park Press reported on Sunday that a Sparta couple created a Sandy relief fund, which is not registered to operate in New Jersey and admittedly does not have the federal 501(c)(3) status that it claimed on its website. The investigation revealed that fund has yet to distribute more than $800,000 in cash donations.

“Any attempt to deceive good-willed residents or business owners into funding a fake charity can be a serious criminal offense — attempting to capitalize off of Superstorm Sandy victims would be unforgivable and incomprehensible,” Oroho stated. “I have confidence in New Jersey’s Attorney General and Division of Consumer Affairs to investigate this or any other questionable Superstorm Sandy charities to determine any ill-intent or fraud. Sandy-related charities should be on notice that their financial records will be checked by state authorities.”

“New Jersey’s economy is going in the right direction under Gov. Christie, and Lt. Gov. Guadagno’s Jobs 4 Jersey and business development initiatives are rewarding residents.

“Gov. Christie’s leadership and our bipartisan reforms have held taxes in check and disposed of government waste. Our Red Tape Review Commission has fostered job growth by facilitating business creation, streamlining local bidding requirements and allowing companies to instantly resume projects stalled due to the Great Recession. Several tax policy reforms are on tap and others are being phased in.

Oroho Urges Assembly Action on Measure to Prevent Youth Steroid Use

The following editorial by Senator Steven Oroho, primary sponsor of comprehensive legislation to mitigate steroid use among students, was recently published in the Courier-Post:

On Jan. 9, National Baseball Hall of Fame voters set the right example forAmerica’s youth by denying former players entry into the Hall of Fame whose careers are justly tarnished by the use of steroids or other dangerous performance enhancing drugs.

Professional athletes make profound impressions on our children, especially on those with dreams of “going pro” and attaining the associated glory, celebrity and money. The decision to keep steroid users from getting to Cooperstown emphasizes that being healthy and honest is more honorable than winning games or compiling superstar statistics. It reminds us that cheating, in the end, does not get you on top, and there is no glory in using destructive drugs that jeopardize your health.

New Jersey Senator Steven Oroho, primary sponsor of comprehensive legislation to mitigate steroid use among students, stated the following in response to today’s vote to keep known and alleged performance enhancing drug users out of Major League Baseball’s Hall of Fame:

“Hall of Fame voters set the right example for America’s youth by denying baseball’s ultimate, eternal distinction to former players whose careers are justly tarnished by their use of PEDs. Hopefully, today’s decision establishes a precedent for future Hall of Fame votes and inspires more leaders of schools, communities, states and collegiate or professional sports to protect children and deter them from being tempted by promises of fame due to steroid use.

“Cheating, in the end, does not get you ahead, and there is no glory in using destructive drugs that jeopardize your health.”

A bipartisan economic growth measure, S-743, sponsored by Senator Steven Oroho, R-Sussex, Warren and Morris, to lengthen previously approved permits by two years was signed into law by Governor Chris Christie.

“The governor’s action today assures that New Jersey will not experience wholesale project abandonments that could significantly hamper an economic recovery,” said Oroho, a member of the Senate Economic Growth Committee. “This measure will help jump-start reasonable development projects that have been stalled due to current economic factors. It is a balanced measure in that it will help grow jobs while keeping in place any federal or state environmental protections that currently exist.”
