During today’s Senate Budget & Appropriations Committee hearing on the DEP, Senator Steve Oroho, R-Sussex, Warren, Morris, also a member of the Senate Economic Growth Committee, commended the DEP’s continuing transformation and issued the following statement:

“Over the last two years, the DEP has undergone a significant change in working to become a more responsive, efficient and effective agency. I’m hopeful the agency’s continued improvement will distance us from the past, during which the DEP impeded progress in our state with costly and lengthy permitting processes, and exceedingly burdensome regulations.

Following testimony from Labor Commissioner Harold Wirths before the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, Senators Anthony Bucco, Kevin O’Toole, Steven Oroho, Joe Pennacchio, and Jennifer Beck remarked that the labor indicators presented to the committee show a marked turnaround for the state’s long term economic health.

Senator Anthony Bucco (R-Morris), Republican Budget Officer:

The Administration is to be applauded for putting the state’s unemployment insurance fund on the path to solvency more quickly than anyone expected. Through a combination of tax reforms, efficiencies, and aggressive prosecution of fraud and abuse, this Governor has fixed the mess he inherited as a result of years of diversions and fiscal irresponsibility by an unchecked Democratic Majority in Trenton.

Oroho Calls for an End to Geographic Aid Adjustment in Budget

At today’s Senate budget hearing examining the State Department of Education, Senator Steve Oroho (R-Sussex-Warren-Morris) called for an end to the school funding formula’s nonsensical “geographic aid adjustment” that deprives public schools in his legislative district and other rural areas of the state their fair share of state education aid.

“Our school district costs are roughly equal to or more than school districts throughout the state, yet the School Funding Reform Act (SFRA) of 2008 adopted by the Corzine Administration penalizes us for a bogus assumption that it is significantly cheaper to educate a child in rural areas,” Oroho said. “As a result, our residents are faced with making up the cost differential via local property taxes. ZIP codes should not factor in the cost or quality of education in this state.”

A bipartisan bill sponsored by Senator Steven Oroho (R-Sussex-Warren-Morris) to lengthen the permit extension period by two years was moved today by the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee making certain New Jersey does not experience wholesale project abandonments that would stop any job recovery dead in its tracks.

“This legislation is paramount for job creation and to preserve reasonable growth projects important to economic development in our state,” said Oroho. “Due to economic factors, many projects have been stalled. When our state economy is primed to reenergize, and we are seeing many encouraging signs, it’s important that these projects are ready to move in order to help facilitate our rebound.”

Oroho/McHose/Chiusano: Latest Figures Continue to Show School Aid Formula Is Broken

Senator Steve Oroho, Assemblywoman Alison Littell McHose and Assemblyman Gary Chiusano (R-Sussex, Warren, Morris) said today’s release of state school aid numbers are a cause of great concern to them as school districts in Sussex, Warren and Morris Counties continue to be deprived of their fair share of education funding.

“This is exactly why we need a new funding formula that is balanced and accountable,” said Oroho. “Dozens of our local school districts are now among about 185 suburban and rural districts shortchanged from receiving basic aid, leaving them faced with potential increases in already too costly property taxes.”

“This truly balanced budget provides property tax relief, decreases income taxes while making the state’s largest pension payment yet following up on our commitment as part of the landmark pension reform legislation enacted last year,” Oroho said. “Because of the responsible budgeting under this governor, we’ve stabilized expenses and helped create a sustained period of private-sector job growth these past two years in stark contrast to the jobs we hemorrhaged as a result of the policy decisions under the former administration.”
